Play debuts in late September
A stage play adaptation of Santa Inoue‘s Tokyo Tribe 2 manga has been green-lit. It will debut at the Shibuya O-East in late September under the title Tokyo Tribe. Imagine Itō is directing the stage play, and Hiroyuki Yashiro is credited for composition.
Itō will also perform in the play himself alongside fellow Umebou dance group performers Shōji Tōyama, Makoto Endō, Takuya Shiono, Tatsuhiko Sakurai, Kazuya Naraki, and Hirotaka Noda. Other actors include Beat Buddy Boi dance and vocal group members SHUN, Toyotaka, RYO, and SHINSUKE, as well as Gō Ueki, Sae Miyazawa, Mirei Tōyama, and rappers ACE, DOTAMA, and KEN THE 390.
The Studio MADHOUSE adapted Tokyo Tribe into a 13-episode television anime series in 2006. Director Shion Sono (Suicide Club, Shinjuku Swan) adapted the manga into a live-action film. North American film distributor XLrator Media released the film in North America via select theaters, video on demand, and iTunes in October 2015.
Inoue also confirmed in May 2015 that producer Patrick S. Cunningham (Starlet, The Room) and screenwriter Darryl Wharton-Rigby (Homicide: Life on the Street, Obon) licensed the rights to adapt Tokyo Tribes as a television series.
