Studio Ponoc and Hiromasa Yonebayashi‘s Mary and The Witch’s Flower (Mary to Majo no Hana) anime film opened at #2 at the Japanese box office. The film sold 324,000 tickets to earn 428 million yen (about US$3.75 million) on 458 screens on Saturday and Sunday.
The film based on Mary Stewart‘s The Little Broomstick book earned 113% of the box office earnings of When Marnie Was There, Yonebayashi’s previous film, during its opening weekend. Yonebayashi and Studio Ghibli‘s anime film opened at #3 in 2014. The film sold 285,234 tickets to earn 378,865,500 yen (US$3.32 million) on 461 screens in its first two days. Yonebayashi and Studio Ghibli’s Arrietty film sold 1,038,138 tickets and earned 1.35 billion yen (US$15.6 million) on 447 screens in its first three days in 2010.
The live-action film adaptation of Rina Yagami’s Ani ni Aisaresugite Komattemasu manga fell from #3 to #4 in its second weekend. The film sold 143,000 tickets to earn 165 million yen (about US$1.46 million) on 251 screens during its opening weekend.
